Building a loft in metal building need advise
2024年8月1日 · I am wanting to build a loft in a metal building. It will be a 20ft span with no center supports. The building has 12 ga. metal framing every 4ft. I am wanting to know if I could screw a ledger board/header to it and then use joist hangers and hang my joist from them. the Ledger/Header would be a 2x12 and also the same for the joist spaced 12 O.C.

2017年5月18日 · Adding a loft could change the building use classification, which would have all sorts of impacts on the design, fire protection, that sort of thing. Your building manufacturer (assuming it was an engineered metal building) may also be able to help you out with a loft design that works with their framing.

You might store relatively light things like skis and lawn chairs, but someone else might put bowling balls, boxes filled with books, etc. This is why seriously over-engineering something like this is far better than building to meet expectations.

Common examples are heavy steel-framed office buildings where the structural steel has been fire proofed, and residential buildings with post-tensioned concrete slab floors and steel stud walls.
