I'm reading more of a sense of detachment, or distraction. Being a popular top host, he likely has more knowledge of the state of operations, than most.

The program guide describes it as follows: "Program Host David Venable shares some of his favorite products and chats with customers." It's a fairly generic/broad description, but the "chat" element could be interesting, especially for all the DV fans out there.
